When in the mood for something spicy and delicious, colorful and satisfying, you may find yourself visiting the eclectic community of South Side on Lamar. Not only are the residents and professional businesses a joy to surround yourself with, the restaurants in the area are a joy to indulge in. Located conveniently inside South Side on Lamar, a historic mixed-use building, Texas Caribbean Foods has just what you're looking for.

Jan Gore, chef and owner of the restaurant, has a personal and delightful relationship with her hungry customers. D Magazine reviewed the restaurant and said, "Besides Jamaican specialities, owner Jan Gore makes a mean Key Lime pie." I would have to agree. While Jan wasn't physically present during the time of my visit, I've met her and I can truly compliment the kitchen and waitstaff to be just as pleasant.

When you arrive in the colorfully decorated restaurant, Caribbean inspired music gave me the feeling of tropics and excitement, because I knew I was about to partake in some international spice! As an appetizer, my guest and I ordered the Jerk Chicken Wraps. It was a cute spin on traditional American wraps and had a flavorful kick. This is a great item to order in a hurry or just as a snack; not too heavy, not too lite. For our main course, I ordered the Chicken Breast Sandwich and my guest ordered the International Gumbo. When I saw the huge portion of gumbo with all sorts of meats and mixings, I was curious to know how it tasted. I almost forgot about my chicken sandwich! Back to my sandwich, one bite of the sandwich and I was hooked. Being a non-spicey eater myself, it wasn't overwhelming. My guest seemed to thoroughly enjoy their gumbo and they've spent some time living in Louisiana! "This is the bomb!" he said. I would have to say the same about my portion. To co-sign on D Magazine's love for Jan's Key Lime Pie, I ordered a slice to top off the lunch date and it was absolutely scrumptious. A great portion of graham cracker crust and tangy filling made me wish I had saved more room!

Texas Caribbean Foods is open for lunch and dinner as well. You can find some of the same entrees for an evening out, in a casual atmosphere. Other menu favorites include several spins on Jerk Chicken, Oxtails, Jamaican Patties and Banana Pudding among other scrumptious desserts. If you'd like to book a special event in the space, or have a large party of guests, arrangements can be made on Sunday's as well! This dining experience has even been reviewed and received an award in the Dallas Observers "Best Of" category. Stop by, meet Jan and the crew, and find out why this is one of Dallas' best kept secrets. It's truly something spicy for the summer.
